  • Survey of condition of timber frame, supporting plinth walls, panel infilling, wall and roof cladding, etc.

  • Drawn surveys of the timber structure frame by frame showing the frame ‘as existing’ and ‘as repaired’. This is increasingly required by conservation officers unable to conduct site visits due to work time pressure.

  • Advise on dendro-dating and use of historic maps in dating the building.

  • Advise evolution of the building, uses and unique features of interest.

  • Advise on listing and assess historical value and carry out a historic impact assessments.   

  • Identify species of timber and conversion technique, e.g. hewn, pit-sawn, circular-sawn, etc.

  • Identify cause of decay and species of wood boring beetle if present.

  • Advise remedial actions required. Prepare schedule and specifications for repairs including timber specification and repair type.

  • Advise on suitable consultants to assist in progressing the project such as building archaeologist, dendrochronologist, engineer, architect, planning consultant, carpenter.

  • Deliver CPD training on best practice conservation and approach to the repair of timber structures.
