Modern Timber Building Construction
Andrew brings an in depth understanding of the detailing and design principles of traditional carpentry into contemporary design. This perspective informs the design process and enables more elegant and robust detailing, after all, timber as a material has been worked for centuries, the tools may be different but the principles remain the same.
Work is undertaken with clients, architects and engineers to help develop timber designs that are efficient, well detailed and grounded in an understanding of how timber structures are made and assembled.
Understanding design challenges and buildability helps to inform costs and avoid costly mistakes. We have long advocated a more integrated approach to construction that involves the makers and builders at an early stage. This is one of the guiding principles of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
Services for contemporary timber construction include
-
Guidance on the selection of structural engineers with appropriate experience in timber structures, recognising the significant influence this choice has on design outcomes.
-
Preparation of CGI images to support design development, planning submissions, client approval and wider stakeholder engagement.
-
Sourcing and coordination of CAD drafting prior to tender to develop well resolved designs that support accurate pricing and high-quality construction.
-
Support in developing timber designs in collaboration with specialist carpenters and engineers, improving buildability and aesthetic outcomes.
-
Advice on construction sequencing and cost as designs evolve, enabling early understanding of buildability and financial implications.
-
Advice on timber procurement, grading, conversion and moisture content, be it kiln dried, air dried or fresh sawn sections, to aligne with design intent and performance requirements.
-
Advice on envelope design to achieve airtightness, thermal performance and weather resistance.
-
Support in the design and detailing of cladding systems to ensure durability, performance and appropriate weathering.
-
Advice on achieving long term performance through informed timber selection and detailing that avoids moisture traps and premature decay.
-
Delivery of CPD sessions focused on the design, procurement and delivery of complex contemporary timber structures.
